These 5 Treats Could be Threatening Your Sparkling Smile!

Your teeth might be the most neglected part of your body. Although they are almost constantly used throughout the day, they receive the least amount of nutritional care. As if that’s not bad enough, your teeth are under a constant onslaught of food that cause tooth decay and lead to bad overall oral health. What follows below are the 5 foods you need to avoid if you want to keep your teeth decay free.

What Do These Foods Have In Common?

Other than sugar, foods high in acid also dissipate your dental hygiene. Acidic foods do this by wearing down your tooth enamel over time. Acid is found in many of the fruits and vegetables that we eat. Fruits and vegetables are both excellent for your health; however, you may practice some moderation with these foods if you want to keep your gorgeous smile.

Apples

Apples are truly a wonder food; not only are they sweet, they are also packed to the core with nutrients and vitamins your body needs. However in your attempt to keep the doctor away you might just bring the dentist a bit closer.

Apples are usually high in natural sugars and acids making them a slight threat to your oral health. Simple moderation will help you keep your teeth strong and body healthy. After all, despite the old saying, you really don’t need an apple a day to keep the doctor away. Additionally If you do eat apples, be sure to rinse out your mouth with mouthwash or water immediately afterwards.

Diet Soda

Any type of soda is bad for your teeth (and health in general). Diet soda is filled with artificial sweeteners that can still cause tooth decay. As if that wasn’t enough, the acid in soda wears away the tooth’s enamel causing cavities and bad breath.

If you’re craving something bubbly and sweet, go for naturally sweetened detox fruit water. Not only will it quench your thirst and satisfy your craving it will help your body get rid of harmful toxins.

Popcorn

While it might taste good popcorn can be awful for your teeth. While most unflavored plane popcorn does not cause a significant rise in the PH levels of your mouth, they are still not the best choice for anyone who cares about their smile. Popcorn can get itself lodged into your teeth and gums, which cause bacteria to formulate in the newly opened space.

What’s worse even if you do manage to pluck out the popcorn, that gap can close quickly allowing for those bacteria to fester.

Peanut Butter

Although peanut butter is full of protein and goes well with many fruits and vegetables, It is actually full of sugars. These sugars help to breakdown teeth and increase the number of bacteria in your mouth. The best replacement for peanut butter is all natural almond butter.

Pickles

Pickles (more specifically the vinegar and brine) are highly acidic. The acids caused by the pungent flavoring of pickles can wear away enamel over time. Although pickling is a great way to preserve many types of food, the acid they create is awful for your teeth.

By avoiding these foods or simply enjoying some of them in moderation you can keep your smile bright longer.
