Energy Efficient Bulbs are Good and All But, Do They Spell the Same For Our Health?

Many people replaced the old standard light bulbs with those environmentally-friendly bulbs to save energy and money, but they are not aware that this new generation of light bulbs is very toxic, so the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created an emergency protocol which people need to follow in the event of bulb breakage because of the poison gas it releases. If it is being broken indoors, the bulb releases 20 times the maximum acceptable mercury concentration into the air.

Reasons to go back to incandescent bulbs

The energy efficient light bulbs can cause anxiety, inability to concentrate, fatigue, seizure, migraines, cluster headaches, dizziness, and even cancer.

  1. They contain mercury which is a potent neurotoxin that is very dangerous to children and pregnant women. It is especially toxic to the brain, nervous system, liver, and kidneys, thus causing tumors, insomnia, anxiety, memory loss, headaches, cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
  2. They can cause cancer which was proven by a study performed by Peter Braun at Berlin Germany’s Alab Laboratory. That is due to the bulbs containing phenol (a mildly acidic toxic white crystalline solid which is obtained from coal tar), naphthalene (a white crystalline compound produced by the distillation of coal tar and is being used in mothballs and as raw material for chemical manufacture), and styrene (unsaturated liquid hydrocarbon which is obtained as a petroleum byproduct).
  3. They emit UV rays. They are recognized as harmful for the skin, which leads to cancer, and the eyes. The radiation from the bulbs directly attack the immune system and damages the skin tissues to prevent the formation of vitamin D-3.

The bulbs mustn’t be put in the regular garbage due to their high toxicity and they are household hazardous waste, so if you break them in the house, you have to open all the doors and windows, and evacuate the house for at least 15 minutes in order to minimize the exposure to the poisonous gas.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates the phase-out of incandescent light bulbs and favors energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.
